Brexit could leave Britain “poorer and weaker”, the former head of MI6, Sir John Sawers, has said today.
Commenting, Chris Bryant MP, leading supporter of Open Britain and member of the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee, said:
“If anyone would know about how Brexit could impact on our security and foreign policy, it is the former head of MI6. His remarks today blow apart the complacent assumption of the Brextremists that our influence in the world will be unaffected by leaving the EU.
“A hard Brexit will weaken our cooperation with Europe on policing and counter-terrorism, and leave Britain outside the room when our allies are discussing sanctions on Russia and North Korea, or how to respond to instability in the Middle East. And the damage it would do to our economy would drain away Britain’s credibility on the world stage.
“The first duty of Government is to keep its people safe. Hard Brexiters should think long and hard before they embark on a no deal strategy. The Government should be concentrating on securing a security deal with the EU that keeps us at the table, rather than talking up the prospect of a destructive no deal Brexit.”
