Commenting on Philip Hammond’s appearance at the House of Commons Treasury Select Committee today, Wes Streeting MP, leading supporter of Open Britain:
“The Chancellor’s grilling at the Treasury Select Committee just highlighted the long list of problems Brexit is posing for our country. He admitted it is possible that planes could be grounded on the day we leave, and that spending money preparing for a damaging no deal Brexit will leave our crumbling public services short of funds.
“And he refused to comment on secret Treasury analysis which will show what everyone knows – that hard Brexit will damage our economy, and that free trade deals with other countries will not compensate for the costs of leaving the Single Market and Customs Union.
“Philip Hammond’s heart isn’t in this because he, unlike many in his party, at least recognises the terrible risks and pitfalls Brexit has left this country vulnerable to. It’s time he and the Prime Minister showed some leadership, took on the hardliners on their backbenches, and reversed their damaging decision to leave the Single Market and the Customs Union.”
