Commenting on Theresa May’s assertion today that leaving the EU “means we can’t be members of every part of the Customs Union”, Wes Streeting MP, leading supporter of the Open Britain campaign, said:
“Theresa May is visiting a Brexit fantasy land long inhabited by hard Brexiteers. As Michael Barnier repeated yesterday, real frictionless trade is impossible outside of the Single Market and Customs Union.
“The Government needs to start injecting some reality into the debate and being honest with people about what is and is not achievable in the negotiations.
“They should start by listening to what businesses and trade unions are saying – ditch the self-harming threat of walking away without a deal and build a bridge rather than drive us off a cliff edge by negotiating a transition agreement that keeps us in both the Single Market and the Customs Union.”
