The Single Market is not a “useless phrase”, but is vital for Britain’s economy

Responding to Boris Johnson’s comments at the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, where he said the Single Market was a “useless phrase”, Anna Soubry MP, speaking for the Open Britain campaign, said:

“The Single Market isn’t a ‘useless phrase’. It’s the world’s largest trading area, and our membership of it boosts Britain’s economy.

“If there’s a deal of ‘greater value’ out there than Single Market membership, then businesses and economists have not come across it.

“The Government needs to provide concrete evidence before it pulls us out of our home market of 500 million customers.”
