Commenting on Liam Fox’s speech at the World Trade Organisation in Geneva this afternoon, and his Today Programme interview earlier, Chuka Umunna MP, leading supporter of Open Britain, said:
“Liam Fox’s performance today has been an embarrassment for anyone who cares about Britain’s trade policy and economic future. Talking about embracing global trade while wrenching Britain out of the biggest trade bloc in the world is bad enough. Describing the most complex negotiation we have faced for years as easy is even worse.
“He can strut around the WTO all he likes, but the simple fact is that new trade deals with other countries, which will take years to negotiate, can never replace the trade with Europe that will be lost by leaving the Single Market and the Customs Union.
“He goes to the WTO to complain about non-tariff barriers to trade, when the Government’s policy will drastically increase those barriers by leaving the Single Market. Ministers need to get real and stop pretending that a 21st Century trade policy can be built on Empire 2.0”.
