It has been confirmed this morning that MPs will debate amendments on the Withdrawal Bill next Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Labour frontbench are currently refusing to support the cross-party amendment on membership of Europe’s economic area.
Commenting, Angela Smith MP, leading supporter of the Open Britain campaign, said:
“It will be a dark moment for the Labour Party if, next week, the decisions of our frontbench, in defiance of conference policy, plunge the UK ever closer to a hard Brexit.
“It will be a mistake of historic proportions for the Labour Party to abdicate its responsibilities and to fail to support the cross-party amendment on EEA membership.
“The Government is delivering a bad deal with new facts coming to light, promises broken and the process in a complete mess. But it's not a done deal and polls show the public want, at the very least, to stay in the Single Market and the Customs Union.
“There is a nonsense argument going about that Labour MPs from the North are in favour of letting a hard Brexit get through, while it is those from the South who are determined to oppose the Government. I want to make it very clear that the majority of backbench Labour MPs in the North would, on a free vote, back EEA membership as a basis on which to negotiate the best deal for Britain. It is shameful that so many are now being pressured to instead let the Government get away with a hard Brexit.”
