The EU’s chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, gave a press conference today in which he stated that leaving the Single Market and the Customs Union makes a hard border in Ireland unavoidable, and that securing a transition period is not guaranteed.
Commenting, Tom Brake MP, leading supporter of Open Britain, said:
“With the cliff-edge rapidly approaching, the Government are asleep at the wheel. The Cabinet seem utterly incapable of sorting out what they want from Brexit and with the road fast running out, it’s time to wake up.
“Today we heard some facts from Michel Barnier. Leaving the Single Market and the Customs Union will lead to a hard border in Ireland. And if the Government doesn't get its act together, there is no guarantee of securing a transition period.
“Ministers may not like engaging with the seriousness of the situation, or sitting down together to agree what they want, but saying ‘we’ll sort it out later’ is not a sustainable position.”
