Bryant – May’s proposals on EU citizens’ rights aren’t good enough

Responding to Theresa May’s press conference after the European Council summit in Brussels, Chris Bryant MP, leading supporter of Open Britain, said:

“Theresa May promised a ‘fair and serious’ offer on the rights of EU citizens – but the reaction of EU citizens and leaders alike suggest her proposals fall well short of what is required.

“We do need more detail. But the fact that we had to wait for a year after the referendum for any action at all on the rights of EU nationals – and the news that the Prime Minister blocked the last Government from making a guarantee of their rights – does not suggest they are taking this subject nearly seriously enough.

“The bottom line is this – absolutely nobody already legally resident in the UK should be disadvantaged as a result of Brexit. They Government needs to do some serious, detailed work to overcome the political and administrative obstacles to this objective.”
