The EU’s chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, delivered a speech today in which he made it clear yet again that the Government’s decision to leave the Single Market and the Customs Union means that the only Brexit outcome possible is a basic free-trade deal similar to the one the EU has with Canada.
Commenting, Mary Creagh MP, leading supporter of Open Britain, said:
“The reality checks for the Government are coming thick and fast from Brussels today.
“Michel Barnier follows hot on the heels of Donald Tusk in explaining the implications of the Prime Minister’s self-imposed red lines, which leaves a Canada-style arrangement as the only option on the table for a trade deal.
“A Canada-style deal would be completely unsuitable for an economy of Britain’s size and would hammer trade with our largest partner.
“It would fall well short of the ‘exact same benefits’ of Single Market and Customs Union membership that have been promised and if that is the case, everybody has the right to keep an open mind about whether the Brexit that is delivered is the right path for our country.”
