Leading supporters of the Open Britain campaign have spoken out in support of a report from the Education Select Committee which says that the Government must address staffing, immigration, and research concerns to avoid a damaging Brexit for UK universities.
Ben Bradshaw MP, leading supporter of the Open Britain campaign, said:
“It is shameful that the Government sees EU citizens living in Britain as ‘cards’ in a negotiation, rather than human beings.
“This Select Committee report makes clear that guaranteeing the rights of EU citizens is the right thing to do, both morally and for our economy.”
Norman Lamb MP, leading supporter of the Open Britain campaign, said:
“This cross-party committee is absolutely right to stress the importance of academics from the EU to our universities and our economy.
“15 per cent of all university staff in our country come from the European Union. They make a vital contribution in building our knowledge economy and supporting our world-leading universities.
“The Government needs to stop using EU citizens as bargaining chips and give them the right to stay in Britain after Brexit.”
