Theresa May attempted to relaunch her ‘green’ strategy today, yet all but ignored the damaging impact of Brexit.
Commenting, Ed Davey MP, leading supporter of the Open Britain campaign, said:
“Today’s speech by Theresa May all but ignored Brexit and the threat it poses to environment protection. There is no such thing as a ‘green Brexit’. In fact, when it comes to managing the growing stresses on the environment, Brexit poses a greater challenge than any other political development that has taken place in our lifetime.
“Climate change and plastic pollution don’t respect national borders. Our membership of the EU has strengthened our ability to drive positive change, particularly at a time when the United States under Donald Trump is trying to opt out of its duties to protect our environment. It is a terrible mistake to follow him down an isolationist road, but that is just what Brexit represents.
“Brexit will give free reign to this or any future Government to water down our environmental standards. Currently, when the government fails to put the interests of the British people first, British people can look to international environmental law in Europe, as we have seen with British environmentalists taking the UK Government to court for breaching air pollution laws. Holding government to account on the environment requires international legal protections, which Brexit leaves behind.”
