Doughty – Davis episode underlines lack of seriousness over Irish border

Brexit Secretary David Davis has had to apologise for breaching Parliamentary protocol over his visit yesterday (Monday) to border areas in Northern Ireland.

Commenting, Stephen Doughty MP, a leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:

“David Davis’s latest foolish episode is just the latest of the mishaps and stupidities driven by a concentrated mix of arrogance and ignorance. It is symptomatic of his approach to the Brexit process.

“There is a deeper story here, though, one more worrying than one man’s personal struggle with a lack of credibility: the refusal of the British government to recognise the seriousness of the Irish border question and the magnitude of the threat that Brexit poses to the Irish peace process.

“Ministers still have no serious proposal about how they intend to meet their obligations under the Good Friday Agreement if they press on with leaving the Customs Union and Single Market. It is now clear that the only plan they have is to fudge their way through the problems and then react with outrage when they are pulled-up for it.

“It is no wonder that more and more people who are serious about preserving and protecting the Irish peace process are demanding a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.”
