Doughty – New Home Secretary’s job “all but impossible” thanks to Brexit

Sajid Javid has been appointed Home Secretary following the resignation of Amber Rudd.

Commenting, Stephen Doughty MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:

“The threat of Brexit makes the new Home Secretary’s job all but impossible.

“His first task is to convince the other EU member states that the British Government are negotiating in good faith and that they will keep their promises: something that the Home Office’s terrible failures over the Windrush scandal makes all the more difficult.

“There can be little confidence, for instance, that the Home Office is up to managing a registration system for the 3.5 million EU citizens in the UK.

“He will then have to propose an entire new immigration policy which keeps the Brextremists in the Cabinet happy without hurting businesses and wreaking further damage on our already struggling economy. So far we have not even seen a White Paper on this, never mind any legislation.

“The new Home Secretary will also have to deal with the extensive security implications of Brexit, from leaving Europol and the European Arrest Warrant to dealing with the growing possibility of a hard border in Ireland.

“The Home Office is now spending hundreds of millions on preparing for Brexit: money that could have been spent on strengthening the police and tackling crime.

“Ultimately he may begin to question whether the chaos being created by Brexit is consistent with what was promised and conclude that the only democratic way through this mess is to support the growing calls for a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.”
