Doughty – Poundworld woes show Brexit “already causing serious and deep damage to the economy”

The high-street retailer Poundworld is reportedly looking at closing about 100 of its 355 stores, putting up to 1,500 jobs at risk. This is linked directly to the fall in the value of the Pound since the Brexit referendum.

Commenting, Stephen Doughty MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:

“Brexit is already causing serious and deep damage to the economy: the latest is the news that Poundworld is looking at closing 100 stores, endangering 1,500 jobs, thanks to the collapse in the value of the pound since the Brexit vote.

“Brexiters may dismiss this, but the people whose jobs are at risk will not feel reassured by warm words and empty rhetoric: the Government’s own figures show that Brexit is going to cost jobs and threatens to make everyone in this country poorer.

“With the false promises of the Leave campaigners fading away, and the economic pain beginning to bite, we need a People’s Vote so that everyone in this country can have their say on the terms of Brexit.”
