Jacob Rees-Mogg, Chair of the influential European Research Group of hard-line Eurosceptic Conservative MPs, plans to deliver a speech tonight in which he will say that the Government’s tone on Brexit needs to “fundamentally change.”
This follows on from his exchange with Brexit Secretary David Davis at the Brexit select committee hearing yesterday, in which Mr Rees-Mogg criticised the Government’s plans for a transition period as turning the UK into a “vassal state” of the EU.
Commenting, Stephen Doughty MP, leading supporter of Open Britain, said:
“Theresa May is losing control of the Brexit process. Not only has she completely alienated pro-Europeans, she now has Brexit extremists on her own back-benches like Jacob Rees-Mogg, as well as members of her own Cabinet, growing increasingly undisciplined.
“This is a direct product of the many hypocrisies and inconsistencies that have plagued the Government's handling of the Brexit negotiations. Theresa May's chickens are coming home to roost.
“Clearly the realities of Brexit are not matching up to what anyone was sold during the referendum. People have every right to change their minds about whether it's the right path for the country."
