We the undersigned call on the government to completely rework their proposed Elections Bill so that instead of suppressing our democratic rights it protects and expands them.
The current proposals will:
- Stop some eligible voters from voting
- Suppress charity campaigning
- Take away the neutrality of the Electoral Commission.
We are in no doubt that a Bill to reform our outdated electoral processes is needed.
We have to cleanse the system of the polluting influence of money and help more people, not less, get to the polls to cast their votes.
These should be the priorities for any Bill designed to defend, protect, and improve our democracy.
The government must go back to the drawing board and return with a Bill that is fit for purpose.
