Hain – Lords have voted to give the Commons a chance to challenge power grab

The Government tonight suffered a huge defeat in the House of Lords over attempts to use the EU Withdrawal Bill to give Ministers the power to rewrite the law.

Commenting, Lord (Peter) Hain, a leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:

“This vote was about Parliament taking back control.

“It is outrageous that Government Ministers have been attempting to take powers to wipe laws off the statute book without Parliamentary scrutiny and the size of the Government’s defeat shows that peers of all parties and none were not willing to let that happen unchallenged.

“We have voted to give the elected House of Commons an opportunity to challenge a ministerial power grab and to slam the brakes on Ministers’ attempts to weaken Parliament via Brexit.

“And as the nature and scale of the Ministerial power grab under the cover of Brexit becomes clearer the demand for a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal will continue to grow.”
