Huq – Forget more money for the NHS, Brexit risks cuts in spending

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has written to MPs promising he will announce new ideas on NHS funding later this year.

Commenting, Rupa Huq MP, a leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:

“Additional funding for the NHS depends on having an economy strong enough to pay for it. Yet the Government’s own leaked analysis shows that Ministers believe every form of Brexit would not strengthen our economy, but instead weaken it.

“The promise made during the referendum of £350 million a week for the NHS is never going to be delivered. Instead the risk is that Brexit leads to a new round of austerity and NHS cuts.

“On top of that Brexit risks putting us at the back of the queue for new drug treatment approvals, and the uncertainty it is creating has already caused a recruitment crisis as nurses from elsewhere in Europe are no longer willing to come here.

“These are all reasons why more and more health professionals and others who care about the NHS are demanding a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.”
