Kyle – Boris Johnson “has resorted to dishonesty” as Brexit promises crumble

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson told Andrew Marr this morning that “we’re not going to be paying in [to the EU] after we leave” – only days after the Chancellor of the Exchequer said we would be paying in to the EU budget up to 2064.

Commenting, Peter Kyle MP, leading supporter of the Open Britain campaign, said:

Boris Johnson must know his claim is, in his own words, 'claptrap', as we will be paying in until 2064 if we leave the EU.

“He has resorted to dishonesty because he knows the Brexit he promised in the referendum, with £350 million a week for the NHS, frictionless trade with the EU, and no hard border in Ireland, is never going to happen.

“Instead we have an NHS in crisis as staff from elsewhere in Europe leave, the Prime Minister has admitted we will take a hit on trade, and Boris Johnson himself is sending secret letters round the government about how to manage a hard border in Ireland.

“As it becomes more and more clear that Brexit will cost us money, weaken our public services, and potentially damage the Irish peace process, we all have the right to keep an open mind about whether it is the right choice for our country.”
