Kyle – Government shouldn’t tie its own hands in Brexit process

Tomorrow sees the start of the eighth day of debate over the Government’s EU Withdrawal Bill. Up for debate will be an amendment that would fix the Brexit date in law, as well as further amendments that would allow ministers to alter the date in certain circumstances.

Commenting on today’s news, Peter Kyle MP, leading supporter of Open Britain, said:

“There is no good reason for Amendment 381. By setting a fixed Brexit date, it serves no purpose beyond satisfying extreme Brexit-supporting elements.

“After agreeing to accept Oliver Letwin’s new amendments, the Prime Minister is now creating unnecessary ambiguity and confusion, simply to avoid having to make a humiliating retreat over her own amendment.

“At this stage, with new facts coming to light and with the complexity of the Brexit process increasing every day, the Government shouldn’t be doing anything that ties its own hands.”
