Kyle – May’s speech a list of reasons why Brexit is complicated, difficult and costly

Prime Minister Theresa May gave a speech today at the Mansion House in London setting out her vision of the UK’s future relationship with the EU.

Commenting, Peter Kyle MP, leading supporter of Open Britain, said:

“This was supposed to be the speech that would finally provide detail about what the Government actually wants. Instead all we got was yet more vacuous slogans, yet more meaningless sound-bites and yet more attempts to have our cake and eat it.

“The Prime Minister accepted that we cannot have the ‘exact same benefits’ as we have now, as she and her Ministers have previously promised. But if she really intends to meet her own test of “protecting jobs” she must reverse her position of leaving the Single Market and the Customs Union, which her Government’s own analysis shows will severely damage our economy.

“And once again, the Prime Minister wasn’t able to provide any credible solutions for avoiding avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland.

“The Prime Minister said she wanted to present some ‘hard truths’: what we got was a list of reasons why Brexit is much more complicated, much more difficult and much more costly than anyone could have known about during the referendum.

“With that in mind, everyone is entitled to keep an open mind about whether it’s right path for the country.”
