Leslie – Chancellor failing to be honest about the costs of Brexit

Philip Hammond made a speech on Brexit this afternoon (Wednesday).

Commenting, Chris Leslie MP, leading supporter of the Open Britain campaign, said:

Philip Hammond now joins Theresa May and David Davis in admitting that Brexit will lead to less access to European markets and less trade, but also in refusing to be honest about what that will mean. It was telling that the Chancellor refused to say that Brexit was worth it when given the chance.

The EU could hardly have been clearer this morning in rejecting the Government’s cherry-picking approach of demanding all the privileges of Single Market membership but rejecting the responsibilities it brings. Yet Ministers refuse to recognise this.

The Government misses every chance it has to be honest with the British people about the costs of Brexit. As these become clearer, everyone has every right to keep an open mind about whether it is the right choice for our country.”
