An amendment to the EU Withdrawal Bill that would have required the Government to publish the legal advice it has received on the revocability of Article 50 was defeated this evening in the House of Commons.
New Clause 6, supported by MPs across the opposition parties, was defeated by 322 votes to 298.
Chris Leslie MP, leading supporter of the Open Britain campaign and, along with Chuka Umunna MP, one of the sponsors of the amendment, said:
“Whilst it is disappointing that this amendment was defeated, it is clear from comments made by legal experts, EU leaders and the architect of Article 50, Lord Kerr, that our notification of withdrawal from the EU is revocable.
“The Government should publish their legal advice on this matter so everyone knows the reality: that Brexit is reversible if the British people change their minds.”
