Irish deputy prime minister and foreign minister Simon Coveney this morning told the BBC Marr programme that the only way to have a seamless border on the island of Ireland was through alignment of rules and regulations on both sides of the frontier.
Commenting, Chris Leslie MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“The Irish Foreign Minister could not have been clearer that the only way to have a seamless border on the island of Ireland is to have regulatory alignment between north and south.
“That means to protect the Good Friday Agreement we must stay not just in the Customs Union but the Single Market too. It would be a huge and costly mistake if the Labour Party does not seize the chance to achieve this by voting to stay in the European Economic Area when the Withdrawal Bill comes back to the House of Commons.”
