A new report published today (Tuesday) by the Institute of Directors finds that the European Union has seen stronger growth as a market for UK exporters than either Asia or North America over the past 2 years. For the business leaders surveyed in the report, the EU remains the region with the highest expectations for growth.
Commenting, Chris Leslie, leading supporter of Open Britain and member of the International Trade Select Committee, said:
“This survey once again underlines the importance of the EU market for British exporters.
“Ministers seem prepared to jeopardise trade with our largest trading partner in pursuit of fantasy trade deals around the world, but it is increasingly clear that this is a huge mistake. In fact, business leaders believe Europe is the region with the best prospects for UK export growth over the next five years.
“We currently have the best of both worlds – frictionless trade with Europe and extensive trade links with the rest of the world, including trade deals with more than 65 countries. Given this, everyone is right to keep an open mind as to whether Brexit is the right path for our country to be on.”
