Leslie – Varadkar’s warning highlights “the basic arithmetic of Brexit”

Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar today warned that the UK faces leaving the EU with no deal unless progress is made on the question of the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Commenting, Chris Leslie MP, leading supporter of the People's Vote campaign, said:

“Leo Varadkar today reminded Theresa May of the basic arithmetic of Brexit. No deal on the Irish border means no deal on anything else.

“As Mrs May has no workable plans or even an agreed proposal on the Irish border, she faces the prospect of having to implement the backstop she agreed to in December or crashing out of the EU with no deal at all.

“Mrs May has no one to blame but herself. She set her redlines to suit her internal party agenda, not in the national interest and now she finds she is in a political cul-de-sac.

“She has no mandate for a hard Brexit never mind a no deal disaster and it is essential that any final proposal on Brexit is put to a People’s Vote.”
