Leslie welcomes EU decision on pesticides: “bees don’t know about borders”

The European Union is to ban nicotinoid pesticides, which are particularly harmful to bees and other pollinators.

Commenting, Chris Leslie MP, a leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:

Once again European countries, working together through the EU, are leading the world on protecting our environment.

Nicotinoids are nerve agents that have a disastrous impact on bees and other pollinators. Bees don’t know about borders and crop failures are not limited by frontiers. That is why cross-continental action is essential, and why the EU’s decision to ban them across Europe should be welcomed by anyone who is serious about sustainable farming.

Quitting the EU would not only leave us outside the room when decisions like this are made, it could also pave the way for this or any future government to slash environmental standards in the UK.

The emerging reality about what Brexit could mean for our environment only strengthens the case for a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.”
