Lucas – Brexit must not be used to lower our environmental and agricultural standards

The House of Lords voted today in favour of an amendment to the Government’s EU Withdrawal Bill that would seek to keep EU environmental protections in UK law post-Brexit.

This was the 15th Government defeat in the Lords over the EU Withdrawal Bill. The vote was 294 to 244 in favour of the amendment, a majority of 50.

Commenting, Caroline Lucas MP, leading supporter of the People's Vote campaign, said:

“Brexit must not be used as an excuse to lower our high environmental and agricultural standards in order to pursue fantasy trade deals with the likes of Trump’s America. That’s why tonight’s vote in the House of Lords is so important.

“Nobody voted for a Brexit that jeopardises the quality of our environment, the cleanliness of the air we breathe or the hygiene standards of the food we eat.

“With the Brexit that is being delivered looking increasingly different to the one that was promised to people during the referendum, we need a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.”
