Lucas – ECJ air quality action shows importance of EU-wide court

The European Commission are referring the UK to the European Court of Justice over a failure to enforce EU law on air quality.

Commenting, Caroline Lucas MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:

“If we leave the European Union then the government would be off the hook for any future court case and that is a big reason why so many of those who want to dismantle environmental regulation are so keen on Brexit.

“They want to end the ECJ’s ability to enforce environmental protection in the United Kingdom. But it is these protections that have cleaned up our beaches, driven up our food standards and set ambitious targets on everything from tackling climate change to eliminating plastic waste.

“As the threat to the environment from Brexit becomes ever clearer, more people are joining the demand for a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.”
