Lucas – Government “have made no serious attempt to solve border question”

It is reported that the European Council have toughened their text of a draft withdrawal treaty with the UK following concerns that the British side have not taken the commitments they made before Christmas to find a solution to the Irish border question seriously.

Commenting, Caroline Lucas MP, leading supporter of the Open Britain campaign, said:

The latest draft of the withdrawal agreement worryingly indicates that the Government have made no serious attempt to try solving the issue of the Northern Ireland border.

The Government have said they do not want a hard border on the island of Ireland but unless they come forward with a tangible solution quickly, that is the inevitable result of their decision to pull Britain out of the Single Market and the Customs Union.

Nobody voted for the return of a hard border in Ireland but if that is a consequence of the Brexit that is delivered, everybody has the right to keep an open mind about whether this is the right path for our country to be on.”
