Lucas – Lords have given the Commons the opportunity to back a People’s Vote

The House of Lords have voted this evening, by a substantial majority, to back Amendment 49 to the EU Withdrawal Bill which will require Ministers to gain the approval of the House of Commons before implementing any Withdrawal Agreement.

Commenting, Caroline Lucas MP, a leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:

“This amendment, if passed into law by the Commons, will ensure Ministers have to secure the approval of MPs for any Withdrawal Agreement they sign with the EU. It would strengthen democratic oversight of Ministers by the people’s elected representatives in the House of Commons.

“But crucially, it would also pave the way for a vote to ensure the decision over whether we accept the final Brexit deal or not is made by the public – not just politicians – through a People’s Vote.

“Once more the House of Lords has voted to put the House of Commons in the driving seat over Brexit. MPs should respond by ensuring the public are also able to express their view on the final Brexit deal, which will affect generations for generations to come.”
