Brexit will have “catastrophic” consequences at Britain’s ports if a new customs systems is not ready to go into operation when the UK leaves the EU, the Public Accounts Committee warns in a new report released today.
Commenting, Alison McGovern MP, leading supporter of Open Britain, said:
“This report shows how the flippant attitude being taken by the Government towards our future customs arrangements now threatens absolute chaos at Britain's ports.
“How many wake-up calls do Ministers need? Their reckless decision to leave the Customs Union, and the growing likelihood of a no deal Brexit, means there is a real and serious risk of a disastrous cliff-edge in March 2019, with tail-backs at Britain's ports, legal chaos and huge additional costs for businesses.
“Nobody voted for this during the referendum. The Government needs to get its act together, drop its ideological obsession with leaving the Customs Union and guarantee MPs a meaningful vote to prevent a no deal Brexit.”
