A new report out today from the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) finds business confidence to be low going into the new year.
Not one of the 200 employers polled thinks economic conditions in the UK will be less challenging in 2018 than in 2017. More than half think economic conditions in 2018 will be more challenging than this year. The Chief Executive of the REC also called on the Government to act quickly to reassure employers that their EU workers can remain in the UK.
Commenting on today’s news, Alison McGovern MP, leading supporter of Open Britain, said:
“Today’s report underlines the damaging consequences the Government’s approach to Brexit is having.
“Given the pain Brexit is already inflicting on our economy, it is unsurprising that employers are not confident about 2018. They are also crying out for the Government to guarantee the rights of EU nationals living in the UK.
“As the Brexit talks move on, businesses are clear that they need certainty, and they need it quickly. The Government needs to realise that the UK’s economic interests are best served by staying in the Single Market and the Customs Union in the long-term and not just for a two year period after March 2019.”
