McGrory – Government’s redacting of impact assessments is a slap in the face for our democracy

Commenting on the news that the Brexit impact assessments prepared by the Government have been redacted before being passed to the Exiting the European Union Select Committee, James McGrory, Executive Director of Open Britain, said:

“This is a slap in the face for our democracy and for the parliamentary sovereignty that David Davis used to profess to care about.

“Parliament voted overwhelmingly for the Government to release these impact assessments to the Brexit Select Committee and Ministers promised to respect that vote. Any decisions about restricting information should be made by the Committee, not by a stroke of David Davis’s big red marker pen.

“The Government has had to be dragged kicking and screaming to release these reports and now they’re backtracking at the eleventh hour. We know why they are so reluctant – because it is clear that Brexit will damage the economy even more than it is already, and they don’t want the public to see the proof.”
