Commenting on Theresa May’s announcement that EU citizens who have lived in the UK for five years could get equal rights to UK nationals for good, James McGrory, Executive Director of Open Britain, said:
"The Government's intention to do something to protect the rights of EU citizens in our country is welcome, if many months too late. Human beings should never have been used as cards in a negotiation.
"The Government needs to provide more detail before its proposals can be fully judged.
"The five-year cut off feels too long, as many people who moved to Britain well before the referendum could be affected. The bottom line is that they need to ensure that no EU citizen legally resident in the UK at present should be disadvantaged by Brexit."
