Liam Fox must use his visit to the United States to publicly eat chlorine-washed chicken, the Open Britain campaign says today, after he reportedly said he was ‘open’ to relaxing restrictions on the importing of the product from the US to Britain.
Taking questions after a speech in the US today, the International Trade Secretary refused to confirm that he would eat chlorine-washed chicken, in the same way that then Minister John Gummer got his daughter to eat a beef-burger in 1990 during the height of the BSE crisis.
Commenting, James McGrory, Executive Director of Open Britain, said:
“If the International Trade Secretary wants the public to trust him, he needs to take the opportunity while he's in the US and devour a chlorine-washed chicken live on camera. The choice of recipe is up to him, but one serving suggestion might be Chlorination Chicken.
“The proof of the chicken is in the eating and if Dr Fox thinks it's safe, he should put his money where his mouth is. If he doesn't, he is just chicken.”
