Murray – “increasingly hard to understand” Prime Minister’s devotion to Brexit

An interview with the Prime Minister was broadcast on the Marr programme this morning (Sunday).

Commenting, Ian Murray MP, leading supporter of the Open Britain campaign, said:

The Prime Minister finally accepts that we won’t have the same benefits after Brexit, and that it will weaken our trade with Europe. She also cannot name a single policy other than fisheries on which she would like to diverge from EU standards. So it is increasingly hard to understand why she is willing to damage the economy by taking the UK out of the Single Market and Customs Union.

“Her plan for voluntary divergence from European standards is simply another attempt to have her cake-and-eat-it which makes a border in Ireland unavoidable and won’t be accepted by the EU.

“As the complexity, and the huge economic costs of Brexit become clear, everyone is right to keep an open mind about whether it is worth it.”
