The Prime Minister has sent Donald Tusk a letter about the UK – Ireland border in which she suggests that she will be willing to consider a “backstop” option if a comprehensive agreement between the UK and the EU is not reached if the UK leaves the EU.
Commenting, Ian Murray MP, leading supporter of Open Britain, said:
“The possibility of a hard border re-emerging on the island of Ireland is entirely a result of the Government’s self-imposed and ideological Brexit red lines.
“This letter from the Prime Minister lacks any kind of detail or serious solutions for the Northern Ireland border, it just kicks the can yet further down the road.
“There are 12 months to go in these Brexit talks and with clear uncertainty as to where this country is heading, everybody has the right to stand back, take a deep breath, and ask, is this really the right thing to be doing?”
