Smith – Don’t be taken in by Gove’s rhetoric on the environment

Environment Secretary Michael Gove gave a speech today in which he discussed some of the Government’s plans for the environment after Brexit.

Commenting, Angela Smith MP, member of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee and leading supporter of Open Britain, said:

“Michael Gove may talk a good game on the environment, but it would be foolish to be taken in by his rhetoric. This is the same man who has previously slammed EU environmental legislation and called for bits some businesses don’t like to be ‘scrapped’.

“Warm words and false promises aren’t good enough from Michael Gove. There’s a big red bus gathering dust in a garage somewhere with the last big promise he made: something about £350 million a week extra for the NHS.

“We know from their record that Brexiters like Michael Gove want to use hard Brexit as an opportunity for massive deregulation of the UK economy. People have every right to keep an open mind about whether this is in our country’s best interests.”
