The former UK ambassador to the US, Sir Peter Westmacott, said today that the prospect of a “generous” UK-US free trade deal with Donald Trump after Brexit is an “illusion”.
Commenting, Chuka Umunna MP, leading supporter of Open Britain, said:
“They say you shouldn’t count your chlorinated chickens until they’ve hatched but the former British Ambassador to the United States has underlined why nobody should expect a generous free trade deal with America.
“From lowering standards on food, to imposing tariffs on our steel and aluminium exports, it is clear that a deal with President Trump will be America First and Britain last and any trade deal will never make up the losses incurred by leaving the Single Market and the Customs Union.
“As the harsh realities of global trade negotiations hit home, it will become clear that the Brexit delivered is not the one that was promised and people have every right to keep an open mind about whether it’s the best thing for our country.”
