Responding to David Davis' interview this morning on the Andrew Marr Show, Chuka Umunna MP, leading supporter of Open Britain, said:
"David Davis has clearly been on quite a journey. For a man who once campaigned for parliamentary sovereignty and resigned over civil liberties, he this morning seemed incredibly unfazed about granting ministers sweeping powers to change legislation.
“Government attempts to bully MPs into not scrutinising or amending the EU Withdrawal Bill are completely unacceptable. This is a profoundly significant piece of legislation which will shape our country and our laws for years to come - we need to have a real, grown-up debate about it.
“As the negotiations flounder, the Government is failing to be honest about the divorce bill because they know it will make a mockery of the promise that Brexit will free up £350m extra per week for the NHS.
“And Davis’ admission this morning that we’ll still contribute to the EU budget under any future deal yet again highlights the absurdity of the Government taking us out of the Single Market and the Customs Union.”
