The President of the United States, Donald Trump, today announced on Twitter that he will not be coming to the UK in February to open the new US Embassy building. Although Trump claimed the reason he was cancelling the visit was because he disagreed with the decision to move the embassy in the first place, the likelihood of widespread protests against him may also have been a factor.
Commenting, Chuka Umunna MP, leading supporter of Open Britain, said:
“In both an unsurprising but welcome turn of events, Donald Trump has spat his dummy out and decided not to visit Britain.
“The current President of the United States is a protectionist who runs scared of debate and protest. A man who is unwilling to open his own Embassy in this country is never going to open the door to a properly beneficial trade deal with the UK.
“It is neither politically astute nor economically sensible to abandon our largest trading partner and instead go cap in hand to a capricious demagogue.”
