The UK must not allow itself to be “blackmailed” by the EU over its Brexit settlement bill, the International Trade Secretary Liam Fox said this morning.
Commenting, Chuka Umunna MP, leading supporter of Open Britain, said:
“This is childish and irresponsible sabre rattling from a Trade Secretary who is bored and without a real job because he cannot negotiate any deals until the UK’s trade relationship with the EU has been clarified.
“Cabinet ministers like Liam Fox and Boris Johnson engaged in unhelpful and overblown rhetoric during the referendum campaign and ever since, promising the earth but so far delivering nothing.
“Until the Government makes progress on the three divorce issues there will be no progress on any kind of trade arrangement, as Ministers already conceded back in June. The Government should be negotiating in the real world, not some fantasy land where insulting our European counterparts is a helpful thing to do.”
