Umunna – Government limping through votes by making big concessions

The Government was forced to offer concessions to potential Conservative rebels today in order to stave off defeat on the so-called 'meaningful vote' amendment to the EU Withdrawal Bill.

Commenting, Chuka Umunna MP, leading supporter of the People’ Vote campaign, said:

"The Government has managed to limp through the votes today but only by making big concessions and allowing Parliament to take back control of the Brexit process if it rejects the deal Ministers negotiate.

"Ministers are in a Brexit mess of their own making, which makes it more likely we will get a bad deal. And they know it.

"Dr Phillip Lee bravely resigned today and backed a People's Vote on the final Brexit deal because he knows the Brexit course being pursued will be damaging for his constituents and for the country.

"With the Government in chaos, divided and barely able to negotiate with its own party, let alone with the EU, momentum is only going to build behind a People's Vote on the final Brexit deal, so that the people of this country can decide whether the deal on offer is good enough for them, their families and our country."
