Commenting on the letter from Sir Ivan Rogers to staff and reports that the Government is considering appointing a senior Brexit supporter in his place, Chuka Umunna MP, leading supporter of the Open Britain campaign, said:
“What the public expects, however one voted in the referendum, is a modicum of competence in handling Brexit and we have seen precious little of it from this chaotic government.
“The UK's outgoing most senior official in Brussels has revealed the Government has no plan for Brexit, he has openly expressed concerns over Ministers' muddled thinking and says they lack sufficiently experienced negotiators in Whitehall. This is no way for a government to carry on and harms the national interest.
“Any moves to end civil service impartiality to dogmatically follow a hard Brexit, putting jobs and businesses at risk, would be unacceptable and unjustifiable.”
