Umunna – Government should back the Customs Union and a People’s Vote to see off Brextremists

A dossier, prepared for Conservative MPs and attacking Government policy on customs, and reportedly sent to Downing Street on Sunday, has been leaked.

The dossier describes Theresa May’s favoured option of a “new customs partnership” as “undeliverable” and demands .the Government ditch it as policy

Commenting, Chuka Umunna MP, a leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:

“The Government’s favoured ‘customs partnership’ model seems to have no friends on any side of the Brexit debate.

“This unworkable proposal - already rejected by the EU - should be ditched in favour of continuing to fully participate in the Customs Union: which is gathering increasing support across all parties.

“The Prime Minister needs to face down the Brextremists in her party who are oblivious to the fact the Conservatives lost their majority last June. This weak Government should not be intimidated by those who favour the hardest and most destructive of Brexits and they should let the people be the judge of the final Brexit deal in a People’s Vote.”
