The EU is to open negotiations on a free trade deal with Australia and New Zealand, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said today.
Commenting, Chuka Umunna MP, leading supporter of Open Britain, said:
“This is yet another reality check for Liam Fox. Just last week he revealed that Australia and New Zealand are among his ‘highest priorities’ for trade deals. Yet today the EU looks to have stolen a march on us.
“Brexiteers promised they could negotiate dozens of trade deals before we left the EU, but now they’ve been forced to admit we can’t. While the EU has been busy agreeing deals with Canada and Japan, Cabinet ministers here can’t even agree on a negotiating position.
“The most important trade relationship we have is with the EU. The Government’s priority should be staying in the Single Market and the Customs Union, and making sure we will not lose out on the trade deals we have secured as a member of the EU.”
