Umunna – May’s Brexit speech was “dishonest and shameless”

Commenting on Theresa May’s speech on Brexit in Wolverhampton this afternoon, Chuka Umunna MP, leading supporter of Open Britain, said:

“This was a dishonest and shameless speech from Theresa May. Dishonest, because she is pretending working people need her to deliver Brexit. But the truth is that her Brexit strategy will make those very people worse off. Leaving the Single Market and the Customs Union as she wants will reduce our trade, hitting businesses and putting jobs at risk. The price rises we have seen since the referendum are just a taste of what is to come.

“Shameless, because she says her Brexit strategy will benefit the NHS when she and her party have voted against giving our NHS the £350 million extra per week that cabinet ministers like Boris Johnson promised, and the Government’s own forecasters predict that our NHS will face a £58 billion black hole in its budget as a direct result of Brexit.

“She has talked up the prospect of Brexit with no deal at all, which would be the worst possible outcome for working people. In this election, it is vital that the Government is not given a blank cheque for a chaotic, extreme Brexit that would leave our economy and our NHS worse off.”
