Umunna – Pledging to negotiate EEA membership “would demonstrate a deep commitment” to shipbuilding and engineering jobs

Jeremy Corbyn is to make a speech today (Friday) in Glasgow on the future of shipbuilding.

The speech is being made as pressure for Labour to commit to support in the Commons the amendment passed by the House of Lords this week on membership of the European Economic Area continues to grow.

Commenting, Chuka Umunna MP, leading supporter of the People's Vote campaign, said:

Negotiating continued UK membership of the EEA would offer certainty of market access to the engineering sector and so keep the skills, innovation and investment the UK needs in Britain.

Engineering jobs in shipbuilding and other forms of modern manufacturing are increasingly dependent on long and complex supply chains that stretch right across Europe.

Labour is already committed to remaining in a Customs Union with the EU and combining that with a pledge to negotiate to stay in the EEA would demonstrate a deep commitment to the well-paid and highly skilled jobs the engineering sector supports in the West of Scotland and elsewhere.”
