Commenting on the CBI’s report today on retail sales, which shows the biggest year-on-year fall since the midst of the financial crisis in 2009, Chuka Umunna MP, leading supporter of Open Britain, said:
“The damage Brexit is doing to our economy is real and happening right now. Sales in our shops have fallen off a cliff over the last year according to retailers themselves.
“This is another sign that the Brexit squeeze is hurting working people in their pockets. As wages have flatlined, the post-referendum plummet in the value of the pound has pushed up prices and hit retail sales.
“This is terrible news for workers and consumers alike. The Government must act to protect our economy by keeping Britain in the Single Market and the Customs Union.”
